The 47 Ronin, Act 5: The Ichiriki Teahouse in Gion, 1860

Comments - Dramatic scene from Act 7 of the classic kabuki drama "Kanadehon Chushingura" of the samurai Teraoka Heiemon attacking his sister, Okaru, outside the Ichiriki Teahouse. After Yuranosuke accused the courtesan of spying on him, Heiemon vowed to kill her to demonstrate his loyalty to the vendetta. Heiemon glares at the courtesan angrily as she scrambles backwards on the ground with an alarmed expression, holding up her hand in self-defense. At right, Yuranosuke watches with a scowl, pointing a fan at the beauty. At upper left, a water dipper rests across a stone basin beneath a lantern hanging from a pine branch, and tie-dyed curtains line the back of the room at top. Nakamura Fukusuke I appears as Heiemon. Nice expressive figures in a handsome setting.
