Scene from Kanadehon Chushingura, 1835 - Great scene from the kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura" at the Morita Theater in Edo, the story of the famous 47 ronin. Here, Lord Hangan sits beside a screen decorated with a setting sun above crashing waves, holding a black lacquer box in his hand and grimacing angrily. At left, Kakogawa Honzo, a retainer of Hangan's friend Lord Wakasanosuke, eavesdrops from behind the screen, a scowl on his face. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danzo V and Sawamura Tossho I. Wonderful detail in the elegant setting.
