Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene from "Hana ayame iroha jikki" at the Nakamura Theater in Edo depicting a confrontation at a tea stand. A young samurai crouches at left, carefully wiping the blade of his sword with a handful of tissues. He looks up with a frown as the elderly man in the center grimaces back at him unhappily. He carries a kettle in one hand, and an offering tray with a red lacquer sake cup on it in the other. At right, the daughter Oshina kneels in front of a straw mat screening the tea stand, coyly tilting her head and smiling. She wears a blue gray kimono patterned with colorful blossoms, her hair adorned with a red lacquer comb, ribbons, and a cluster of flowers. An attractive design with a handsome landscape setting, detailed with burnishing on the black kimono at left.
