Scene from Na ni takashi mariuta Jitsuroku, 1855

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene from Na ni takashi mariuta Jitsuroku at the Nakamura Theater Matsudaiya Shirobei attacking a man attempting to climb aboard a boat, raising his sword high above his head while simultaneously dangling a beauty over the side by the back of her neck. At left, the bloodied Kamata Matahachi struggles to stay afloat while gripping another fellow around the neck. White-capped waves splash against the ship, trees are silhouetted in black against the dark night sky on the distant shore. Interestingly, all three roles are played by Ichikawa Kodanji IV. A striking design.
