Sneaking up on Minamoto Yorimitsu, 1863

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the thief Hakamadare Yasusuke sneaking up on Minamoto no Yorimitsu as he was playing the flute while strolling at night. Hakamadare crouches at left gripping his sword in one hand as he lifts his white outer robe above his head. Yorimitsu grins slyly as he looks at the full moon in the night sky, his flute in his hand. At right, the beauty Kocho no Mae has been hiding beneath an ox skin, smiling as she looks up at the nobleman. she wears a softly shaded robe over a blue kimono patterned with spider webs and armor trimmed with fringe. Autumn grasses and blossoms fill the background, creating an attractive setting for the figures. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Ichizo, Nakamura Shijaku, and Iwai Kumesaburo. A great design, nicely detailed with an embossed pattern on the white robe.
