Smiling Beauty with a Poem Slip, 1863

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the samurai Sano Genzaemon Tsuneyo paying a visit to a beauty's home. The woman smiles happily as she holds a poem slip in her outstretched hand, looking at her visitor fondly. He seems rather agitated, resting on one knee and looking up with a worried expression. The beauty wears a simple blue robe over a white kimono, a string of prayer beads visible below the hem of the sleeve. A young attendant kneels on the floor behind her, frowning with displeasure. The rustic verandah opens onto the night sky, the view framed by colorful orange maple leaves. The actor at left is Kawarazaki Gonjuro. Nice expressive figures.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 18 1/2"
