Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Bamboo: Genji Pine, Bamboo, and Plum, 1864

Comments - Attractive scene of Prince Genji enjoying an evening stroll around a garden surrounding a lake. He grins as he looks over his shoulder at the beauty standing at left next to a garden gate. Her kimono is shaded from red to light green with a design of flowers and ribbons, and her hair is adorned with a comb, hairpins, and red ribbons. At upper right, stepping stones lead to a mansion on the opposite shore, the view framed by delicate hydrangea blossoms. The title refers to the "Three Friends of Winter," pine, bamboo, and plum, so-named because they do not wither in cold weather unlike other plants. A charming subject, nicely detailed with soft bokashi shading.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 29 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - Good detail. A few holes, tear at edge, thinning spot, repaired. A few creases.
