Scene from Musume Hyoban Zen'aku Kagami, 1865

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play Musume Hyoban Zen'aku Kagami at the Ichimura Theater in Edo of three women outside at night. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tossho II as Kinzumi Okichi, Bando Mitsugoro V as Osaraba Oden, and Onoe Kikujiro II as Kumokiri Oroku. At bottom center, Oden looks up with a demanding expression as she reaches up her hand for the purple cloth held by her companion. At left, Okichi watches the pair closely, a yellow bag in her hands. She wears a boldly patterned blue kimono over a red under robe, a red print obi tied around her waist. Tall trees in silhouette fill the background beneath the evening sky. An interesting subject in an attractive setting, nicely detailed with soft shading.
