Prince Genji and Beauties in Springtime, 1865

Comments - Charming scene of Prince Genji and his companions inside a room opening onto a verandah in springtime. The nobleman smiles happily as he looks up, a sword in one hand and his sleeve held to his chest. Gently touching his sleeve, the young girl at his side wears a blue kimono patterned with chrysanthemums. At right, a courtesan in an elegant robe patterned with plovers in flight above crashing waves eavesdrops from behind a folding screen decorated with irises growing in a pond, a stack of futons behind her. Blossoming cherry trees frame a view of the blue sky beyond. An attractive design, nicely detailed with embossing on the white areas of Genji's kimono and the white collar and trim on the courtesan's robe.
