Scene from Hanagawado Wakai Mono Ju, 1862

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play Hanagawado Wakai Mono Ju at the Ichimura Theater in Edo. At left, the young samurai Shirai Gonpachi stands outside a door, frowning unhappily as he eavesdrops. Inside the room at right, Chobei kneels on the floor with an angry grimace, his arms folded firmly across his chest and tucked into the sleeves of his boldly patterned kimono. A wooden bucket can be seen at left, and blue and white curtains hang in the doorway. From left, the actors are Ichimura Uzaemon XIII and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Chobei. Nice detail in the setting.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 14" x 19 1/2" + margins as shown
