Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Teahouse Garden, 1861

Comments - Terrific view looking down into the garden of a teahouse. At right, an elegantly dressed courtesan and her two young kamuro or child apprentices, dressed in matching kimono, arrive at the entrance. Inside the fenced courtyard, other beauties stroll about the garden accompanied by kamuro and other attendants. Beneath a flowering cherry tree in the center of the space, tiers of smaller wooden buckets are stacked atop a large tub of water for putting out fires. Inside the building at upper left, a beauty reads a long letter as a young girl kneels before her. At bottom center, a laborer balances a red lacquer table with a platter of fish and other food atop his head. A lively scene with wonderful detail, including embossing in the cherry blossoms, fine bokashi shading.
