Temporary Quarters of the New Yoshiwara: Courtesans Patronized by Owariya Hikotaro Viewing Cherry Blossoms, 1866

Comments - Incredible five-panel scene of pleasures boats crowding the Sumida River in springtime. Elegant courtesans patronized by Owariya Hikotaro enjoy the view of cherry trees blossoming along the banks of the water, with visitors climbing steps down to the shoreline to awaiting boats. Boatmen kneel on the roof of the large ship at right, poling the craft through the gently rippling water. A lacquer tray of refreshments sits in the front of the boat, decorated with a bonsai pine tree and plants. The women are all dressed in sumptuous kimono, their hair artfully arranged with hairpins and combs, and each is identified with a red name cartouche. At far left, two boats are loaded with pyramids of sake casks, with floral decorations on top for a festival celebration. An absolutely fascinating design, beautifully detailed with soft shading on the water and sky. A rare five-panel print and an excellent depiction of a favorite spring pastime.
