Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Matsuwakamaru and Sawamura Tanosuke III as the Nun Kiyoharu, 1863

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene featuring Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Matsuwakamaru and Sawamura Tanosuke III as the nun Kiyoharu. At left, Matsuwakamaru has retrieved a kimono sleeve from the water with a fishing net, staring angrily at the nun at right. A fire basket hangs over the edge of his boat. Having been reduced to begging, Kiyoharu looks back at him with a strange smile, her black robe and hat in tatters. Behind her, a blossoming cherry tree frames the water and sky. A handsome composition, detailed with soft shading on the clouds at lower left, the water, and sky.

Artist - Kunihisa II (1832 - 1891)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 19 7/8"
