Shigetada at Yuigahama, 1889

Comments - Bold kabuki scene from the famous tale of the young Soga Brothers. After Suketsune murdered their father, he ordered that the young brothers be executed to prevent revenge, the killing to take place on the beach at Yuigahama. At left, the samurai Hatakeyama Shigetada arrives on horseback with a message to stop the killing, waving the note at the end of a slender bamboo pole. He wears an unusual green and purple kimono coat over a brocade robe, and a black court cap with a burnished pattern. Waves lap at the shore behind him. The actor is Onoe Kikugoro. A great design.
