Night Rain at Gion, 1847 - 1852 - Fantastic scene from the tale of Taira no Tadamori and the oil thief from a series parodying the famous Eight Views of Omi. The warrior had been charged by the Emperor Go-Shirakawa to capture a demon figure seen lurking around a temple at night, which, when seen in silhouette, had a spiky head and seemed to breath fire. Watching carefully, Tadamori discovered it to be only a vagrant monk, whose shaggy straw hat gave the illusion of spikes, carrying flaming lamp as he went from along stealing the oil from the lanterns at the shrine. Here, Tadamori races through a grove of trees as he catches the monk in the act, frowning angrily. A dramatic design from a rarely seen Hiroshige series, wonderfully detailed.

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two attached panels, backed with paper. A few wormholes, a couple small tears at edges, repaired. Creasing, wrinkling, slight soiling. Please see photos for details.
