Fishermen on the Beach at Odawara by Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)

Original Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock Print
Fishermen on the Beach at Odawara

Series; Pictures of Famous Places on the Fifty-three Stations (Vertical Tokaido), 1891 Memorial Edition
A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Pictures of Famous Places on the Fifty-three Stations (Vertical Tokaido) - In his 1855 Vertical Tokaido series, Hiroshige departed from the horizontal format of all his other Tokaido series, utilizing the upright form to create expansive landscape views with a sense of distance. His inventive compositions include many fine views of rivers and the sea. From the urban center of Edo, where the journey began, to the beautiful rural landscapes of the provinces, these handsome illustrations offer a wonderful depiction of travel along the famous Tokaido Road during the Edo era. This print is from the 1891 Memorial Edition.

Fishermen on the Beach at Odawara - Handsome view of the shore at Odawara, with a group of fishermen on the beach pulling in a large net at left. The thatched roofs of the village frame the scene at bottom with pine trees towering above the tiny figures. White sails dot the water and a faint yellow glow spreads along the horizon. Nicely detailed and shaded.

Artist - Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 8 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - Good detail. Vertical fold at side, a few repairs and creases.
