Series; Pictures of Famous Places on the Fifty-three Stations (Vertical Tokaido), 1891 Memorial Edition
A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Pictures of Famous Places on the Fifty-three Stations (Vertical Tokaido) - In his 1855 Vertical Tokaido series, Hiroshige departed from the horizontal format of all his other Tokaido series, utilizing the upright form to create expansive landscape views with a sense of distance. His inventive compositions include many fine views of rivers and the sea. From the urban center of Edo, where the journey began, to the beautiful rural landscapes of the provinces, these handsome illustrations offer a wonderful depiction of travel along the famous Tokaido Road during the Edo era. This print is from the 1891 Memorial Edition.

View of the Ocean from the Teahouses on the Hill at Kanagawa - Lovely moonlit view of the ocean with ships anchored in the bay for the night. Guests enjoy the cool evening air from the verandah of a teahouse at lower right, colorful red lanterns hanging from the eaves. A full moon shines high in the evening sky, casting a luminous glow over the water. A beautiful Hiroshige subject.
