Karaki Masaemon and Otani, 1847 - 1852 - Great scene of the master swordsman Karaki Masaemon and his wife, Otani. They pause under a tree while traveling, the beauty kneeling beside a pine tree while her husband holds up a lantern with an angry scowl. Fields stretch out behind the couple beneath the softly shaded night sky. In a kabuki play known as the "Igagoe Revenge," which is based on a true incident, Masaemon joins his brother-in-law, Wada Shizuma, in a vendetta to avenge the death of Shizuma's father at the hands of Sawai Matagoro. Nice expressive figures in a handsomely detailed setting. A rare Hiroshige series.
