Ganryujima: Miyamoto Musashi, circa 1844 - 1845 - Great depiction of the famed 17th century swordsman Miyamoto Musashi saving a woman from an attacker. Wearing an informal blue and white tie-dyed kimono, he grips the enemy by the collar, having already disarmed him, the sword fallen to the ground below. Another attacker lies motionless behind the beauty, who looks up at her hero with a grateful smile. The scene takes place outside a home in the mountains, a tall pine forest silhouetted against the night sky where a flock of birds passes before the moon. A terrific samurai subject from a rarely seen Hiroshige series.
