A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Hiroshige's Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji - In Japan, Mt. Fuji is a sacred place and a symbol of the country itself. Rising majestically near the center of Japan, Fuji dominates the landscape and the Japanese national identity. Hiroshige’s wonderful Fuji views show the mountain in each of the four seasons from a variety of vantage points. Hiroshige utilized a vertical full oban format to create dramatic and breathtaking views of this most revered landmark, often framing the peak From the urban city center of Edo to cherry blossom viewing in a small village to the fantastic crashing wave off Satta, the mountain remains a constant, serene presence from both near and far. Seen less frequently than some of his more well-known series, "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji" ranks as one of Hiroshige's best vertical format series.

The Sea Off Satta in Suruga Province, 1858 - Fantastic view of a huge wave at Satta curling along the right edge of the scene and exploding into a spray of white foam, dwarfing the tiny boats in the distance. White-capped waves crash along the rocky shore in the foreground, contrasting with the calm surface of the water beyond. Pine trees frame a view of the peak of Mt. Fuji at left, with a flock of birds flying high across the sky. An outstanding, dramatic design with wonderful color and movement, considered by many the best from this series. A real Hiroshige masterpiece.
