Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes

The Two Brushes Tokaido - Between 1855 and 1857, Hiroshige and Kunisada collaborated on a series known as the "Two Brushes Tokaido." The upper portion of each print features a landscape view of the station by Hiroshige, with Kunisada contributing the large figures below. The scenes include travelers and workers along this famed route, characters from myth and legend, and kabuki actors. The series includes 55 designs, comprising each of the 53 stations plus the starting point, Nihonbashi, and the ending point, Kyoto. These attractive designs are beautifully printed, with soft bokashi shading in the landscapes, and fine line work in the figures and clothing. An interesting complement to Hiroshige's more well-known Tokaido series.

Hakone: Yumoto Road, Futagoyama, and Sanmai Bridge 1854 - Interesting scene from a drama about the crippled young samurai Katsugoro. His devoted wife Hatsuhana pulled him on a cart to Hakone to pray for a miracle to heal him, and he recovered the use of his legs. Here, Katsugoro sits atop a straw mat on the cart, holding up a lantern as he looks over his shoulder with an angry frown. The beauty tilts her head as she struggles to keep the cart moving under his weight. Above, an evening view of Futagoyama shows travelers crossing the Sanmai Bridge over the rapids, stone boulders dotting the river below, with rounded hills in the distance. Nicely colored and shaded.
