Seiko Kawachi (born 1948) Original Japanese Woodblock and Intaglio
Fly! Over Hokusai (VI), 1995

Seiko Kawachi - Seiko Kawachi is considered one of the foremost woodblock print artists in Japan. While studying for his degree in oil painting at the Tama Art University, Kawachi began experimenting with many forms of printmaking, including silkscreen and lithograph. After winning the Grand Prix at the Japanese Print Association Exhibition in 1976, he has worked mainly in woodblocks. His work often combines woodblock printing with engraved blocks (intaglio), with swirling and repeated lines adding a distressed appearance to his images, often bordering on abstraction. Rarely seen in the market, his prints are a great choice for a collector of contemporary Japanese Art. His prints are in museum collections around the world, including the British Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Comments - Fantastic, extra-large format print referencing Hokusai's famous "Great Wave," with chickens flying up over the waves. Kawachi did a series of prints on this theme. A dynamic contemporary design that would make a striking framed display. Signed in pencil and numbered at lower right edge.
