Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of the wife of Kusunoki Masashige holding a naginata with both hands, a slight frown on her face. She wears a light brown kimono patterned with flowers and leaves over an under robe with bands of green and red prints. A scallop-shaped inset above depicts her son, Kusunoki Masayuki, who had planned to commit suicide after his father 's suicide following his defeat at the Battle of Minatogawa. His mother reminded him of his obligations to the emperor, convincing Masayuki not to kill himself but instead serve the emperor. Detailed with metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the blade of the naginata. Nice expressive figures.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 9 1/4"

Condition - Nice detail. Backed with paper. Curling.
