One Hundred Masterpieces of Famous Ukiyo-e
Taisho era Takamizawa Album

Takamizawa's Taisho era Reprints - With the increase in Western visitors to Japan in the first quarter of the 20th century and the interest in the Edo era woodblock print tradition, some of the best publishing houses began to release high quality ukiyo-e of the most famous scenery and portrait prints from the Edo era. The Takamizawa Publisher, the finest reprint publisher of the era, published this beautiful print during the Taisho era (1911 - 1925). Drawing on the traditions and methods of the Edo era, the prints were produced with the original Edo era colors and printed on beautiful handmade paper. The prints were produced with the utmost care and great attention to detail, masterfully reproducing color, line work, fabulous mica backgrounds and embossed printing. Takamizawa's reprints were a fantastic achievement and were released to great acclaim. Some of the most popular subjects quickly became a scarce commodity.

One Hundred Masterpieces of Famous Ukiyo-e - During this period, Takamizawa published an album featuring 100 of the most famous designs from ukiyo-e. They were produced in a smaller "postcard" print format that was rarely produced. Most surprisingly, Takamizawa didn't cut corners in the production of these smaller reprints - they produced them with the same quality and attention to detail with which all of their reprints were produced. They included fine embossed printing and rich mica backgrounds - a rare inclusion on smaller format prints.

Today, these lovely old "postcard" prints from "One Hundred Masterpieces of Famous Ukiyo-e" are rarer and more valuable than some of the fine oban reprints produced by Takamizawa during this time period. This series featured a number of uncommon subjects that were hardly ever produced in reprint format. This beautiful Taisho era release by Takamizawa is a great opportunity for collectors interested in these classic images in a unique format.
