Comments - Beautiful scene from the play "Seki Konroku Haru no Komagiku" of the nobleman Hirai Yasumasa playing the flute under a full moon. The bandit Hakamadare Yasusuke, followed him out onto the moor, intent on stealing Fujiwara's robe. However, when he heard the beautiful sound of Yasumasa's flute playing, he became so enchanted that he didn't attack his intended victim. This incredible design shows Yasumasa in the center panel in formal court dress, the flute held to his lips. At right, the young Kidomaru, disguised as a beauty, watches him with a slight smile, holding the skin of an ox over his shoulders. At left, the wild-haired rogue slowly draws his sword as a misty cloud passes before the moon. The robber's long hair is tied back in a long ponytail, and he wears a black fur cape over his shoulders. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan IV, Ichikawa Danjuro IX, and Onoe Taganojo II. A fantastic kabuki subject, beautifully drawn, and detailed with light embossing on the beauty's pink and white kimono and soft shading in the night sky.
