Original Kokunimasa (1874 - 1944) Japanese Woodblock Print
Receiving the Army and Navy War Heroes Medals, 1895

Comments - Handsome depiction of a ceremony where army and navy heroes of the Sino-Japanese War receive medals. In the center, an officer bows as he accepts two medals, the Emperor watching from a plush red chair trimmed with fringe at upper left. Soldiers and sailors line the room wearing dress uniforms, their medals pinned prominently to their chests. An interesting historic subject, nicely detailed with metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the medals and sashes and subtle burnishing on the black uniforms in the foreground. The first time we've seen this subject.

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 26 7/8" + margins as shown
