Scene from Ikake Matsu

Comments - Dramatic scene from the play commonly known as "Ikake Matsu," at tale about a poor tinker who becomes the robber Ikake Matsu in order to live a life of ease. Here, Ikake Matsu has sneaked into the house of the beauty Osaki, the wife of Bunzo, to rob the couple. He threatens a clerk at left, waving his sword at him as the commoner cowers in fright, throwing his hands out in alarm. At right, Osaki turns her head away, hiding her face behind her sleeve as Ikake Matsu grabs hold of her obi. At left, a tobacco set rests on the floor next to a lacquer tray holding a bottom of sake and dishes of food. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kobunji, Ichikawa Kodanji, and Onoe Kikugoro. Nice expressive figures in a handsomely detailed setting.
