Nakamura Fukusuke I as a Young Man Carrying a Boulder, 1855

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of Nakamura Fukusuke I as a young man traveling with what looks like a large boulder tied to his back with rope. He leans heavily on the rustic wooden pole of a bamboo garden fence as he makes his way up a slope, staring back over his shoulder with a rather crazed expression, his hair hanging shaggily at the sides of his face. A sword wrapped in brocade cloth rests ground below. An expressive figure and an unusual scene.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 7/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with nice detail as shown. Horizontal centerfold, vertical fold at side. A few repairs, wrinkling throughout. Please see photos for details.
