Series; Heroic Commoners in Kabuki (Rien kyokaku den)

Ichikawa Danzo VI as Amakawaya Gihei, 1863 - Expressive kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danzo VI as Amakawaya Gihei in Act 10 of the famous play about the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura." Disguised as guards, the ronin have paid a surprise visit to the Amakawaya Shop owned by Gihei to test his loyalty. Gihei has been entrusted to store weapons for the night attack on Moronao's palace, and he refuses to give up the location, even when one of the samurai threatens to kill his young son. Here, Gihei sits atop a large woven chest, which houses the weapons, his arms firmly folded across his chest, an alarmed expression on his face. Nicely composed, detailed with burnishing on the black obi and embossing on the white areas of the kimono.
