Scene from Sano Keizu Soga no Gosho-zome, 1862

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Sano Keizu Soga no Gosho-zome." The senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji plotted the downfall of her junior, Onoe, by exchanging a sandal for a valuable statue in Onoe's care. Here, Iwafuji creates a scene after discovering the sandal in place of the statue. She waves the sandal above her head, staring accusingly at Onoe, who kneels in the center, eyeing the raging woman suspiciously as she holds out a long letter in her hand. At left, Onoe's loyal young maid, Ohatsu, watches from behind a screen at left, unhappy at the ill-treatment of her mistress. The screen features a magnificent pattern of a dragon appearing out of black clouds, while panels lining the back of the room feature an ancient blossoming plum tree. From left, the actors are Sawamuro Tanosuke III, Sawamura Tossho II, and Bando Hikosaburo. A great design with wonderful detail in the interior setting.
