Scene from Kagami no Ura Hiyoku no Hanatori, 1855

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Kagami no Ura Hiyoku no Hanatori," a drama about outlaw Shirai Gompachi, who is wanted for the murder of his uncle. When a gang attacks him, hoping to capture him for the reward, he easily fights off his attackers. During the fight, the palanquin of the otokodate Banzui Chobei stops for a break while traveling, and Chobei witnesses the fight. Here, Gompachi threatens Chobei's younger brother Chokichi, who holds up a lantern, his face partially hidden behind the sleeve of his boldly patterned plaid coat. Gompachi watches him warily, a few loose hairs giving him a disheveled appearance after his fight. Bushes run across the background beneath the night sky. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro I and Bando Takesaburo I. Nice expressive figures.
