Comments - Interesting scene of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his retainers packed onto his ship as they prepare to enter into a naval battle during the Genpei War between the Minamoto and Taira clans. He sits on a folding stool at the front of the cabin, listening to a report from the samurai kneeling before him, who gestures across the water. The loyal warrior monk Benkei keeps a lookout from the prow, shielding his eyes with his hand as he scans the horizon. The ship features the paulownia crest of the Minamoto clan on the elegant roof and blue draperies. On a smaller boat at lower left, a archer puts an arrow to the string, ready to fire. A terrific design, nicely composed and detailed.
