Iwai Kumesaburo III as Goro Tokimune, 1856

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Iwai Kumesaburo III as Soga Goro Tokimune, the younger of the two famous Soga Brothers. The pair has snuck into the Shogon Minamoto no Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji to kill Suketsune, the nobleman who murdered their father when they were just boys. He holds a flaming torch aloft as he prepares to step into the cabin where their enemy is sleeping, grimacing angrily and thrusting his chin up defiantly. He wears a blue vest and olive green kimono patterned with his trademark symbol of butterflies over red leggings, the robe tucked up at the back for easier movement. The paulownia crest of the Minamoto clan appears on draperies above, adding graphic impact. A handsome design.
