Courtesans and Wandering Monk, 1866

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of two courtesans in an interior with the monk Fukami Juzaburo, a komuso or wandering monk who travels the countryside playing flute as a form of meditation. The beauty in the center wears a black kimono patterned with large blossoms, tied with a red obi with a design of cherry blossoms and a folded letter. The kneeling woman smiles back at her, dressed in a robe decorated with colorful feathers. At right, the monk watches the beauty suspiciously out of the corners of his eyes. He holds a shakuhachi flute and his basket hat and black monk's mantle rests on the floor nearby. On the wall behind him is an image of Okame, the goddess of mirth, with a scroll hanging in the alcove at right. Bando Hikosaburo plays Juzaburo. Lovely color and detail in this attractive image, detailed with embossing in the white kimono collar.
