Series; Eighteen Honorable Acts

Kagekiyo, 1892 - Dramatic scene of the great warrior Shichibyoe Kagekiyo fighting off guards trying to capture him during a ceremony honoring the Great Buddha (Daibutsu) statue at Nara. After the decisive defeat of the Taira clan at Dan-no-ura by the Minamoto, the Taira commander Kagekiyo determined to kill Yoritomo, the leader of the Minamoto. When he heard that Yoritomo would be visiting Todai-ji Temple in preparation for the reconstruction of the Great Buddha there, he attempted to assassinate him during his visit. Wearing a boldly patterned dark blue and white kimono at upper right, Kagekiyo agilely balances with one foot on the wooden scaffolding and the other on the sculpture, having just pushed one of the attackers away. The unfortunate guard tumbles backwards, knocking down several men along the way, while others continue to clamber over the framework in an effort to reach the samurai. An intriguing subject with a bold composition, framed by a gourd print border.
