Series; Eighteen Honorable Acts

Tsurigitsune (The Trapping of the Fox), 1897 - Handsome illustration from the Noh kyogen play "Tsurigitsune," which tells the story of a fox outwitting an old trapper. Disguised as a priest at left, the fox is able to persuade the trapper to toss his trap away. The trapper sits quietly at left, his rolled up trap on the floor before him. The characters are set against a golden yellow background emulating squares of gold leaf, an interesting effect.
