New Play at the Kabukiza: Daisu no Kiri, 1891

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Daisu no Kiri" at the Kabukiza or Kabuki Theater of a samurai threatening a matron, raising his sword above his head with both hands. The woman looks up at a fellow samurai wearing a matching black coat and kimono tucked into brown print pants, who stares back at the other fellow with a tight-lipped frown. The young boy at lower left seems alarmed, throwing one hand out at his side. Reed blinds hang overhead, and blossoming cherry trees frame a view of the deep red sky. Beautifully detailed with a burnished geometric pattern on the black coat and kimono.
