New Year Felicitations at the Palace, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Terrific scene of Prince Genji paying a New Year's visit to a palace, bringing many gifts with him. He smiles as he gestures at the presents laying on the floor before him, his young attendant taking rolls of silk brocade from a large black lacquer trunk to add to the pile. The items include bolts of cloth wrapped in tissue paper and tied with ribbons, a lacquer box, a pineapple, and a scroll. The princess at right smiles shyly into her kimono sleeve as her attendants express their pleasure. The room is elegantly decorated with a folding screen with a bamboo motif at right and shoji windows in black lacquer frames opening onto a lovely garden view framed by a blossoming plum tree. Wonderful detail in this attractive image, including embossing on the white kimono trim.
