Theater at the Minister's Residence: The Subscription List, 1888

Comments - Great image of a kabuki performance at the Minister's residence with the Meiji Emperor and Empress in attendance at upper left. Wearing a military uniform, the Emperor sits on a plush red chair trimmed with fringe, ladies-in-waiting surrounding the royal couple. In a scene from the play "The Subscription List," Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men try to sneak across the border dressed as monks. The nobleman Togashi is charged with intercepting them, and asks them to explain their business. Thinking quickly, the warrior monk Benkei says they are collection subscriptions to a temple fund. At left, Benkei looks up with a slight frown as he strikes a pose with a folding fan in his hand. At right, Togashi scowls angrily as he watches the monk. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro IX and Ichikawa Sadanji. Nicely detailed with embossing on Benkei's white pants and the white pompoms on his stole, and burnishing on Benkei's black vest and Togashi's black court cap.
