Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Magician Appearing in a Cloud of Smoke, 1865

Comments - Intriguing kabuki triptych featuring a magician appearing in a cloud of smoke at left, grimacing angrily as he holds up a red and orange brocade banner. In the center, a young samurai with a thick ponytail stares up at the apparition as he wrings water from his kimono sleeve. He stands against a rust colored curtain with writing on it. At right, a samurai watches the sorcerer with an astonished expression, his mouth slightly agape. Below him, a beauty smiles up at him as she coyly tilts her head, a bow resting over her shoulder. Great large, expressive figures, nicely detailed with bokashi shading in the night sky and fine line work in the hair.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 1/4"

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. Three separate panels. Horizontal centerfold. A couple small repairs and creases, very slight rubbing on beauty's face. Please see photos for details.
