Scene from Kamakura yamasakura no gosho zome, 1848

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Kamakura yamasakura no gosho zome," a tale about the junior lady-in-waiting, Onoe. The jealous senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji replaced a valuable statue in Onoe's care with a sandal, then pretended to discover it. Here she berates the bewildered Onoe, thrusting the sandal at her accusingly with an ugly sneer. She wears a striking black kimono patterned with wisteria. The beauty looks up with an alarmed expression, her mouth slightly agape as her loyal nursemaid watches over her shoulder with an angry grimace. The shamed Onoe commits suicide, and Ohatsu avenges her death by killing Iwafuji. From left, the actors are Sawamura Sojuro V, Onoe Kikugoro IV, and Matsumoto Kinsho I. Nice expressive figures, with cherry blossoms framing the blue sky above.
