Taira no Shigemori and Minamoto no Yoshihira Galloping through the Snow, 1897 - Terrific scene depicting Taira no Shigemori and Minamoto no Yoshihira engaged in mounted combat outside in a garden of the Imperial Palace. Arrows whiz through the air as the first rider's dappled horse leaps past a tree at left, the samurai leaning forward against the horse's neck, its mane and tail flying, kicking up clumps of snow. The warrior following him grimaces with rage as he grips his sword overhead with both hands, his mount racing around the tree trunk. He wears a fine suit of armor and a battle helmet topped with a demon's head and antlers. In the distance at right, an archer gallops behind, fitting an arrow to his bow. A fantastic image full of energy and action, with wonderful detail, including burnishing on the armor.
