Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Reigns of the Emperors of Great Japan, 1878

Comments - Fantastic group portrait featuring Japanese emperors up through the Meiji era. The first Emperor Jimmu sits at bottom center wearing a bright yellow robe and holding a sword upright, strings of bright beads crossing his chest. At lower right, the Empress Jitu smiles as she looks over her shoulder, holding a folding fan and wearing a purple brocade robe over a white kimono tucked into hakama pants. At lower right, the Emperor Meiji sits on a plush red chair, wearing a black military uniform trimmed with fancy braid and holding a plumed hat in his gloved hand. Each ruler is identified with a number in a circle, which corresponds to the list of names above. A terrific historic subject with expressive figures and lively color.
