Bando Minosuke II as Amakawaya Gihei, 1830

Comments - Great kabuki scene of Bando Minosuke II as Amakawaya Gihei in the classic drama about the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura." Gihei has agreed to store weapons for the vendetta at his shop. To test his loyalty, Yuranosuke's men arrive and threaten him, but he refuses to divulge the secret. Yuranosuke then reveals himself, telling Gihei that he has passed this challenge. Then Yuranosuke cuts off the hair of Gihei's wife, Osono, stating that she has become a nun and so cannot remarry. Osono's father had been pestering her to divorce Gihei so that he could marry her to a rich man. Here, Geihei looks over his shoulder with a sad expression as he hold a cloth out in one hand. Osono's hair and tortoiseshell comb and hairpin lie on a green cloth on the floor before him. The huge wooden trunk conceals the weapons, and ledgers hang on the wall beyond. An interesting illustration for Act 10 of the play.
