Series; Models for Painting

Models for Painting - Born in Edo in 1830, painter Taki Katei became known for his beautiful kacho-ga or paintings of birds and flowers. He was appointed an Imperial Household Artist in 1893, and completed many Imperial commissions and works for both national and international exhibitions. His "Models for Painting" (Tanjo Ippan) was originally published in 1894 in a set of five volumes with twelve prints each. Rendered with wonderful calligraphic line work ranging from bold to delicate, these designs convey a sensitivity to and respect for nature. Some images are heightened with soft colors, while others resemble traditional sumi ink paintings. Subjects include flowers, plants, fruit, animals, and birds, along with landscape views. Several depict suiseki, small naturally formed rocks that are appreciated for their beauty and shape. The prints in this group are from a later edition.
