Series; Hodomoyoshi’s Fashionable Otsu Pictures

The Nun Seigen Biku; Oni, circa 1845 - 1846 - Wonderful image from Kuniyoshi's series pairing beauties with otsu-e, traditional folk paintings sold to travelers during the Edo era in Otsu on Lake Biwa near Kyoto. Here, the nun Biku pauses while traveling, looking up with a smile. She wears a black nun's robe over a blue kimono, a hat and walking stick in hand and a cloth bundle tied over her shoulders. The inset above features a fierce oni or demon dressed as a traveling priest, wearing a small gong and carrying a mallet, an umbrella tucked under his arm. A handsome design from this rarely seen series.
