Matron with a Letter, 1876

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of Ichikawa Danjuro as aa matron holding out a letter as she looks at her young companion with a worried frown. At left, the beauty smiles happily as she tilts her head coyly, one hand tucked into her sleeve. Her red kimono features blinds and floral decorations with ribbons called kusudama. The woman at right looks down with a strange grin, both hands atop an elegant lacquer armrest. She wears a white under robe shaded in yellow with a lightly embossed geometric pattern. A colorful design with large expressive figures set against a background shaded from red to green.
