Atsumori Disguised as a Beauty and Kumagai Naozane, 1881

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych of the Minamoto samurai Kumagai Naozane angrily confronting his fellow warrior Anewa Heiji. In the center, Naozane waves a folding fan in his outstretched hand as he glares at his companion. He wears a beautiful outer kimono patterned with the takaramono or precious treasures, emblems of prosperity and good fortune such as a sacred jewel, a magic hat that allows the wearer to become invisible, and a raincoat that makes the wearer fly. The beauty Kohagi at left is actually the young Taira warrior Atsumori in disguise after the defeat of the Taira clan to evade his enemies, the Minamoto. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro IX, Onoe Kikugoro V, Nakamura Shikan IV, and Nakamura Fukusuke IV. Nice expressive figures.
