Nakamura Shikan as Yashagoro in a Snake Kimono, 1881 - Great kabuki scene featuring Nakamura Shikan as the warrior Yashagoro, shown at left drawing his sword with a furious grimace. He wears a striking kimono patterned with a hissing snake over a suit of armor, his short hair sticking up atop his head with longer locks pulled into a low ponytail over his back. At right, a young samurai played by Ichikawa Danjuro holds a gun, looking up at the night sky with a frown. His red vest has a dragon over the shoulder, worn over a tan floral kimono and armor, two swords at his side. Pine branches frame the night sky, with a glowing full moon and trees silhouetted along the horizon. A fascinating subject.
