Five Chivalrous Men under Blossoming Wisteria, 1854

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of the five chivalrous men under blossoming wisteria vines. These otokodate or street knights were common men who ostensibly protected local people from outlaw samurai. Each wears a delicately shaded kimono patterned with kanji characters, with a white towel draped over his shoulder or around his neck. Each is armed with a single sword, and four of them have shakuhachi flutes tucked at their backs. Overhead, delicate white flowers and graceful vines provide an attractive setting for the figures. An attractive spring design with nice expressive figures and bokashi shading in the background.
